In 1962 Ford Motor Company engineers and stylists developed the Ford Mustang I prototype, a novel sports car with a mid-ship engine. The creation of this car showed Ford’s renewed interest in racing and performance, and this car became the forebearer of race cars and of the popular-production Mustang. Although intended as a road vehicle, the prototype had a racing-type windshield and an integral roll bar, and it made its formal debut at the United States Grand Prix in Watkins Glen, New York, on October 7, 1962, where test driver and contemporary Formula One race driver Dan Gurney lapped the track in a demonstration using the second “race” prototype.
This Ford Mustang I prototype was meant to cause a stir but was ultimately deemed too extreme for mass-production. After reactions from potential customers and focus groups showed that this car had limited appeal to the general public, a completely new concept car, the Mustang II, appeared the following year. The modern Mustang is a direct descendanct of this second prototype.
