Early Monterey Auction Highlights

Because the Monterey week is often the highlight of a car collector’s year, it’s no surprise that the auction business has its biggest weekend of the year in terms of both sales and in the cars offered. Le Mans-winning race cars, classic Ferraris, and purebred Porsches stand shoulder to shoulder, and the sight of such machinery gathered in one place is often enough to make enthusiasts weak in the knees.

1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider by Scaglietti at RM Sotheby’s

Historically, RM Sotheby’s has often boasted the highest sale total of all auction houses, and is regarded as one of the “can’t miss” events. This year, the company expands its sale to three nights, with a lineup where cars like the McLaren F1 and a Jaguar C-Type Works Lightweight aren’t necessarily the highlights! Known for its selection of Ferraris, you can’t get much closer to the top of the car collecting pyramid without having a Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider in your garage.

1969 Lamborghini Miura P400 S at Mecum Auctions

Boasting a more than 600 vehicle lineup catering mostly to classic American metal, there are often hidden gems in the lineup. Moreover, owing to the clientele at Monterey, Mecum is highlighting mostly European metal—including this stunning and largely original 1969 Lamborghini Miura P400 S.
