If you’re looking for a way to get yourself into a Porsche but can’t afford the ever-increasing price of admission for a ‘Neunelfer,’ this 944 Turbo could be your way into the club. They are fairly light (under 2800lbs (about 1180kg)) and make good power (217hp), which allows for runs to sixty mph in a tick under six seconds. If you need to turn, they’re also known to be good handling cars. Additionally, their aerodynamically superior front fascias are better looking than the naturally aspirated models’.

This Porsche 951 (the internal code for the turbo model) has about 103,000 miles on the clock and is a seemingly original, garage-kept, two-owner car. It is also well-equipped and includes several options such as: power windows, four-piston Porsche engraved calipers, power seats, cruise control, and, shudder, a removable moonroof.

Nice car but massive running costs. Engine is also a nightmare to rebuild as the bores are hewn out of Alusil. Save your money and get a 911 instead.

If you DIY and treat the platform with respect, the 944 turbos are an absolutely wonderful car and can be extremely reliable. Solid power, good fuel economy, balanced chassis, good brakes, and quite practical (hatch!) I have put nearly 30k miles on my 86 with only one tow (it is at 155k miles now.) This includes multiple 1500 mile road trips with 12+ hr straight drives. Most of the parts cost the same or less than my e39 530i, and the Porsche requires less of them! Since the ad is down, GL to the new owner or the current owner had a change of heart.

you are right, running costs can be horrendous.
many bargain hunters fail to realize that while a $100k car may now only cost $10-20-whatever, it will still have the running costs of a $100k car.

The CL ad is down already, but these are great fun cars to drive and respond very well to modifications. Having had one in the past from about 89 to 92, though, I would have to forewarn that it was an absolute money pit and love/hate relationship. If you’re a mechanic and DIY’er or even if not, be prepared for large repair bills. After all, a 4 cylinder engine at 2.5 liters is absolutely maxed out, then add to that a turbocharger and all of it’s associated hardware and the heat that it produces, and no wonder they are finicky. The price of maintenance and repair should not be perceived as relative to the price of entry on these vehicles. With that said, I want another! 🙂
