While Ford’s German subsidiary could only offer the Capri to American consumers, General Motors’ Opel brand had several more models on our shores. Sold by Buick dealers, the Opel GT was the most exciting of the German brand, although underneath it was a pedestrian Kadett. From 1968 through ’73, 103,463 of these “baby Corvettes” were built.

This 76,000-mile 1970 Opel GT was purchased in October 1970 from a Buick dealership in Illinois. The seller claims the same mechanic who installed the air conditioning unit at the dealer when new is the same guy who has maintained it until two years ago. Over $8k has been invested in the past three years to bring the mechanicals up to snuff, including rebuilding the transmission, rebuilding the steering rack, and replacing the factory carb with a better-running Weber. The “paint is good but not perfect,” although a partial respray in the original Chartreuse has helped. Seller says the GT “shows some rust in places, but not extensive” so it may behoove interested parties to learn more about the weak spots on GTs. Original books, warranty document, and tools are included in the sale.
