When Alfa Romeo went from producing exotic cars to something more suitable to the tizio on the strada, the brand maintained everything that made its cars wonderful but added an aluminum twin-cam four-cylinder motor with hemispherical combustion chambers. That song may not have hit the charts like Rock Around the Clock, but the music it produced made it #1 with a bullet.

Alfa Romeo introduced the Giulia for 1963 as a replacement for the Giulietta berlina sedan, and the sporty Sprint coupe (and its Sprint Speciale variant) and Spider convertible styles. The Sprint GT coupe in particular was designed by the inimitable Giorgetto Giugiaro while working for Bertone. As something of a poor man’s gran turismo, the Sprint GT was the first of the new Giulia coupes and came with the 1570cc twin-cam four and advanced features like four-wheel disc brakes (which “America’s sports car,” the Corvette, didn’t receive until 1965). Through 1966, 31,955 Sprint GTs were produced until the Sprint GT Veloce (GTV) replaced it, which was basically the same car with a stronger motor.

This Grigio Grafite (Graphite Grey) 1964 Sprint GT is a relatively unmolested Alfa whose first owner lived in Italy. Aside of a repaint, rebuilt motor and brakes, and new carpet, it is in relatively original condition. All chrome is either new or in excellent condition. Overall, previous owners have resisted upgrading it to GTA specifications (which would require aluminum body panels), which is often the fate for these cars. All it really needs is an enthusiast to hop on a plane to the Netherlands, shell out approximately $51,500, and hop in to drive throughout Europe in what may be the ultimate vacation.
