“Where’s my Bentley?” James Bond, as played by Sean Connery, asks Q before being introduced to the Aston Martin DB5 in Goldfinger. While the DB5 wasn’t the first car Bond drove on screen, it’s the most iconic, and thanks to modifications provided by Q Branch provides much of the inspiration for the many others that came after it.

Cars and gadgets have been a near constant presence during 007’s 23 appearances on the silver screen. It’s hard to believe that it has been more than five decades since audiences first heard Sean Connery say “Bond…James Bond,” but writer Ian Fleming’s ironic British Secret Service agent has been an enduring one. Bond film number 24, Spectre, is just around the corner, and so is author Fredric Brun’s new book, James Bond Cars, a look at the cars of the James Bond films and behind-the-scenes stories that helped make many of them so memorable.

Brun’s book covers more than just Bond’s four wheeled machines. Divided into three different sections: Heroes, Villains, and Other Machines, it shows that the villains have certainly proven they can compete with the best that Q can conjure up, while also delving into some of Bond’s non-four-wheeled modes of transportation…including airplanes, jetpacks, and even a gondola.

While there may be little new information for the most dedicated Bond fan, James Bond Cars is a fun read, and a worthy companion piece to the films that will give the reader a chronological look inside the vehicle casting choices for the films. Better still, it’s lled with wonderful photography that will make you want to watch the entire series once again…if you have time to watch more than 20 films over the next few weeks.

Spectre will be released on Nov. 6 in the U.S., and features Bond’s latest car, an Aston Martin DB10.
