What is Your Favorite Album for a Weekend Morning Drive?

You wake up to the dreaded, piercing buzz of your alarm clock. Disoriented, you stumble out of bed; stretching, yawning, craving more rest. It’s 6:00am. After fighting the urge to return to sleep, you soon realize that today is different, it’s Saturday. There won’t be a commute to the office this morning, an eight hour shift is certainly not in the plan. The work week is over, and although the weekend has begun, there are a lot of other things that you need to take care of. But such things aren’t on your mind right now.

Instead, you’re getting ready to take your car out for an early morning drive to a favorite destination of yours; say, Cars & Coffee for example. The destination is about an hour away, and unless carburetors and exhaust notes fit the bill, you’ll surely want your favorite musician providing the soundtrack for your drive. If you had to grab or stream one album, undoubtedly your favorite for a drive, which would you choose? Please refrain from any “Best Hits” albums or compilations. As for me, the windows would be down (regardless of temperature) and The Velvet Underground’s Loaded would be cranked. Oh, and there’d surely be a huge grin on my face.

So, what is your favorite album for a weekend morning drive?

The Pretenders first album. Followed closely by The Doors “Strange Days”. Then there’s Bruce Cochburns “Breakfast in New Orleans”. Or, in a very different direction, Keith Jarrett’s “Koln Concert”. And then swing into “Something Else” by Cannonball. Closer to lunch, something by Laura Marling. Maybe “I Speak Because I Can. ” Wow, this is getting hard!!!

tape deck plays at half speed so I listen to the radio to obscure unhealthy automotive sounds. Pedal-down the gearbox and engine cut through enough to make itself known. Slow speeds and speed humps in carparks provide the loudest squeaks – yuk! – ’71 3 litre 6cyl 3spd column shift sedan with chrome and searingly white paint –

I own a 69′ Camaro In Tehran and i really prefer to listen to engine roaring than any other sound.
however if I am on my modern cars I prefer 80’s rock: GunsNroses, AcDc,Pink floyd, Whitesnake…

As much as I love music, I only listen to it when driving modern cars.
In a classic I vastly prefer the deep rumbles and vivid crescendos produced by a mix of DCOE’s, cool air and mountain walls… 😉

When really moving on down a twisty back road, I play ZZ Top’s “Eliminator.” On the freeway with cruise control on, Eagle’s “Hotel California,” ’cause it takes me back to a time and place that’s no longer there, which I can never leave.

My favorite album to play when driving is from Peter Gabriel album called “So” from 1986, it’s a fantastic album.
I always play the album in fact the cassette has been stuck inside my stereo since 86 which I cannot eject from the player. This happened as soon as I drove out of the showroom when I purchased my Ferrari Testarossa all those years ago. The dealer wouldn’t come to the party to fix it so I didn’t bother either so I listen to the album once a fortnight for the last 28 years and I never get bored.

For me one of the ultimate driving songs is the Stereophonics “Maybe Tomorrow”, it goes nicely with and orange sunset gilding along on a deserted motorway heading into some stunning Alpine scenery, black skies on the horizon and skis on the roof rack.

Also quite a fan of David Gray’s “White Ladder” album for driving.

For some reason, Led Zeppelin 1 and 2, found it’s way into my Boxster 7 years ago, and when I decide to play the stereo, which is not with any regularity, I love to blast this cd. Stereo is great, and I have other cd’s, but prefer the mechanical sounds more. I am enjoying reading everyone’s choices.

This is something I will have to wait to find out, seeing as my Alfa Spider doesn’t have a properly working stereo. And even if it did, you wouldn’t be able to hear the music over the sound of the exhaust and wind noise!

In the Maser QP and the Alfa GT Junior, the opening cut from the Quantum of Solace soundtrack. In the Alfa 2600 Spyder, “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” sung by none other than the Chairman of the Board with arrangement by the great Nelson Riddle.

Joni Mitchell’s ” Shadows & Light ” Two thumbs up . I had the privilege of attending the Red Rocks concert on the S&L tour backstage with a certain mentor/associate who was in the band .

Still one of the best live concerts I’ve ever seen . As far as Little Feat .. Steely Dan .. Joni ? Not a bad one in the bunch !

Like T J says “It all depends”. For a blast over the hill to South Lake Tahoe on Hwy 50 I’d have to say Chickenfoot III. For most other leisurely cruises…anything by Joe Bonamassa. Most of the time tho’ the I-pod’s on blues rock shuffle.
