Driving This Ferrari GTO Is a Certain Kind of Ecstasy

Using hyperbole to describe the 1964 Ferrari 250 GTO is unnecessary. The car speaks for itself. It is one of the last (of thirty-six) Ferrari GTOs ever built. This particular one, chassis #5571, was the first of the Series II bodies. It is equipped with a 3.0L V-12 producing about 300 horsepower and it completed multiple endurance races, winning its class in the 1964 Daytona Continental 2000km, Sebring 12 hour, and Nassau TT.

As a youngster pumping high-octane gasoline for local muscle car owners in Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley during the 1960s, Mark Lundquist could only dream of owning a 1965 Chevrolet Malibu Super Sport (SS). As if to make up for lost time, however, Mark now has four Chevy SS cars (as well as a beastly “standard” 1968 Camaro) of varying vintages parked in a Joshua Tree, California, garage that inspires envy in every guest who drops in. And yes, this collection includes a ’65 Malibu SS.
Tatra T87: Things of the Past
Play
Other drivers speed past this Czech oddity without a second glance, seemingly oblivious to the car’s dorsal fin and triple headlights. But as Paul swings the Tatra into a parking space in front of a favorite local bistro, it’s as if he has brought the black teardrop to a stop in the middle of a Hollywood spotlight. Here come the second glances, the puzzled questions. "What in the world is that?"
Purist Loves This Car Just The Way It Is
Play
We’ve been asking–actually, begging and pleading–for a ride in this monument to Americana but James Chen always found a way to politely turn us down. He is, he says, willing to share his Ferraris and Lamborghinis and Cadillacs, but he and his family enjoy such a personal relationship with this particular car that he seldom shares it with outsiders. He finally gave in.

All I can think about every time I watch this video is how desperately I wish this had been the more attractive fastback model instead. This thing is hideous comparison, which is harsh to say of such a great car.

It would be nice to thank Giotto Bizzarrini for such a special car, he designed and engineered it.

What a beautiful film, and a fabulous car… I was lucky enough to be in the Paddock at the Goodwood Revival in 2012 for the 50th Anniversary of the 250 GTO as 15 (or so) moved out for their parade lap… I’ll never forget the sight’s, sound’s and smell’s…

Congratulations to all of you who made this, & for Derek allowing it. Probably the best car vid I’ve ever seen. Dunno if there are any award a video like this can be nominated for, but I hope there is.

Stunning Video, goosebumps at the sound of that engine on some of the onboard shots!

What is the Music accompanying towards the end? It sounds a lot like Mogwai? But can’t find it?

Spectacular! I had to watch it a few times because I really can’t concentrate on listening to both the commentary and the gorgeous images and sounds of the car. It would be awesome if there was a separate version of just the car, the driver and the sounds of that engine.

Well… I have to say that this was the best yet.

To be honest, as amazing as the 250 GTO is, it was just wonderful listening to Mr. Hill speak with such sincerity and fondness for his father, as well as listening to him go through the gears with similar sincerity and fondness… all the while giving us a brief history lesson while we are effectively passengers along for the ride of a lifetime.

Thank you.

Stunning car, wonderful story, amazing video and one of the best sounds on the planet.
If only sportscars produced today stirred the soul like the greats of the 60’s. Flowing bodywork, fantastic engines, REAL manual transmissions and no electronic nannys – having to learn the car.
Thank you for making this site and creating these videos!

This being released on the same day as the Laugherrari videos is a funny coincidence but the GTO looks far more fun and exciting to drive on the road and the NOISE! Talk about passion, excitement and a living breathing machine! Comment on the LF was it felt like a faster 458, well when I last drove a 458 the last thing it needed was to be faster. A GTO as we know, is not about the speed but how it makes you feel, which I imagine is amazing. Here is a great review for those who might not have seen it from a respected road tester.

Petrolicious, you have absolutely outdone yourselves!! What a fantastic piece.
I don’t know if Derek owns this car, but whoever does deserves the utmost respect for allowing it to be driven as intended. When seeing a car such as this GTO in a static or rolling display, it’s like seeing a caged Lion, awe inspiring to see yet I can’t help but feel a touch of sadness knowing what it is and what it’s capable of and will never get the opportunity to be again. Kudos to Derek and the owner.
THAT ENGINE SOUND at speed!!!!! One of the best of all time, simply melodious.
Done commenting, gotta watch that again…….and again…..and……..

Although I was guessing we’d see a Ferrari 250 video soon (which Matthew Lange also predicted in an earlier article), I let out an audible gasp when I saw there was a video about the 250 GTO. I literally got goose bumps and chills (plural) running down my spine. I am incredibly grateful that we got to see and hear it being driven as it was meant to.

Some of the videos can be slightly off-putting when it’s just talk and watching cars standing still or barely rolling. It’s not criticism directed towards the filming crew, since they obviously have to abide to the owners’ demands. The owners themselves are obviously entitled to drive (or not drive) their cars in whatever fashion they like. In my opinion though, it’s so much more special when they are driven as they were built to. I feel like the cars not only wants to, but also needs to, get wrung by the neck from time to time.

Tears welled in my eyes watching this video.

It probably does not get better than experiencing this car, and I say probably only because there is but one other car that can equal it and that it is the 250 GTO Series 1.

Thank you Petrolicious and Derek Hill for this dream of a video, the best to date by far!

Matthew Lange

Where to begin. I watched this at work first and, as all great car videos should do, I immediately wanted to cut the rest of the day run home and take the Daytona out and wring it out to 7500rpm to hear that V12 wail, although there are no roads around my home that is anywhere as good the road used in the vid.

Huge thanks to the team at Petrolicious, Derek, and the unnamed owner (unless it’s changed hands in the last few months the owner is not anonymous) for putting what is easily Petrolicious best video to date. Hopefully it will get shared on every social media platform as it is a must see

I dont think much has to be said about a Ferrari 250 GTO but i must say no video has giving me chills like seeing this car. This car is just the essence of pure 100\% car lust. The beauty of this machine is astonishing and then you mix that with the sound of the exhaust which sounds like pure euphoria. Im gonna be watching this video a few more times Im sure of it.
